| Title: Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program Final Grant Report (KM) |
| Abstract: The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries (LSL) Program is a discretionary grant program that began in FY 2002 with the purpose of increasing student literacy rates in poor areas by improving the libraries in these impoverished schools. Only districts with at least a twenty percent poverty rate are eligible. The program supports competitive grants to local educational agencies (LEAs), including charter schools that are LEAs. The program is housed in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. To receive a grant, applicants must sufficiently demonstrate both their financial need and their commitment to one or more of the following activities: increasing library holdings, improving schools' technological resources and capabilities, facilitating Internet links and other resource-sharing networks, enhancing professional development opportunities, and expanding hours of access to library services. |
